The best days for being outdoors are upon us. The weather is wonderful and you’ve got at least 4 months to plan and carry out your summer road trip itineraries. The great state of Georgia is chocked full of beautiful destinations to see and explore, so where do you start? We’ve picked a few great places around the state for you to check out for your best RV weekend getaways.
If spending time along the coast is top of your list then put Crooked River State Park on there. Located in St. Mary’s, GA along the southeastern coastline, this beautiful park is made up of intercostal waterways and maritime forests. There are plenty of hiking and nature trails that lead to spectacular views of the coast and up close encounters with the parks inhabitants, such as gopher tortoises, crabs and herons. The nature center also houses local species of snakes and turtles and other waterfowl. A short ferry ride takes you to Cumberland Island National Seashore which is popular for its secluded beaches and wild horses that roam the island. Back on the mainland, camping conditions leave you nestled in between beautiful palmetto trees and oaks covered in Spanish moss. Camping along the coast of Georgia is definitely worth the drive.
Located just off 1-75 in the heart of Georgia is Indian Springs State Park. Popular for its various outdoor recreations, this state park offers the chance to experience natural springs in their truest form. There is an old spring house just a short hike from the visitor’s center that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the great depression. Guests love coming to the park to wade in the fresh waters of Sandy creek and swim in McIntosh Lake. You can also go boating, fishing, kayaking or canoeing on the lake. There is a small museum in the park that showcases the history of the Creek Indians. Campsites are available for overnight stay or you can choose one of their cozy cottages.
In the Northwestern side of the state is Rocky Mountain Recreation and Public Fishing area. This area is perfect for the avid fisherman. There are two recreational lakes that offer great stocks of largemouth bass and sun fish. The lakes can also be used for boating, swimming, kayaking, canoeing and other watersport activities. The wildlife that inhabits the park includes white tail deer, turkey, and waterfowl making this a popular destination for hunting in season. Camping within the park is available all year.
A weekend away at any of these beautiful parks is enough to give you just a small appreciation of what Georgia has to offer.
