Amicalola Falls State Park
Seeing as the National Park Service is celebrating 100 years this year, we thought we’d explore some of the state and national parks in our own back yard. One of the prettiest in Georgia is the Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawsonville. Join us as we give you an inside look as to why this park is so unique.
Amicalola, meaning “tumbling waters” in the native Cherokee culture, was named for the beautiful waterfalls that take presence within the park. Amicalola Falls is a 729 ft waterfall, the tallest waterfall in the southeast United States. Visitors to the park can view the falls from a carved out walking path which is easy to access, or by trudging up the harder trail complete with an intricate staircase. Climbers who complete the trek up the staircase can become part of the Canyon Climbers Club.
The park itself sits on over 829 acres of land. There is a 57 room lodge and conference center that can be rented out for meetings, receptions, weddings and much more. If you prefer a little more rustic accommodations there are 14 cottages on site complete with all the amenities needed to spend a night out among the wilderness. For a more primitive experience, there are 25 campsites within the park, all with picnic tables and a fire pit for your use. A restaurant, visitor center, and gift shop are also located within the park, close to the lodge, so that you can enjoy a fresh cooked meal and take home a souvenir.
Activities available within Amicalola Falls State Park include over 12 miles of hiking trails. The 8.5 mile trail from the park to Springer Mountain is part of the southern end of the Appalachian Trail. The rest of the trails range from easy to hard and offer great views of the waterfalls and the surrounding beauty of the park.
The lodge offers activities to its guests such as archery, zip lining, guided hikes, a GPS scavenger hunt, and a wall climb among other seasonal activities. The best and busiest time of the year to visit Amicalola Falls is in the fall. The colors are among the most beautiful you’ve ever seen and provide a picturesque backdrop against the waterfall. Lodging and campsites fill up fast so make sure to book in advance.
